What is Science? How is it Practiced? What Makes Someone a Scientist? And how can we, as consumers of science, evaluate the works of others?
Introduction
Hi, my name is Ziv, and I’m a young scientist.
This blog marks the beginning of a journey—a journey for myself as I put to pen (or keyboard) my thoughts, knowledge, and the works of others, creating a repository of valuable information for anyone interested in better understanding the world of science.
What is Science?
Science, at its core, is a systematic pursuit of knowledge. It’s about asking questions, testing ideas, and building upon what we know to understand the natural world. It involves experimentation, critical thinking, and a willingness to be proven wrong, as new evidence constantly reshapes our understanding. But what makes someone a scientist? It’s not just the job title; it’s a mindset. A scientist is anyone who approaches the unknown with curiosity, rigor, and the intent to find the truth, even if that truth is different from what they expected.
Purpose of This Blog
The main goal of this blog is to share my knowledge and offer my perspective on how science is done today—and how I believe it should be done. As an aspiring scientist, I understand that I don’t have all the answers. There may be times when I make mistakes or misinterpret something, but that’s part of the process. Science is a continuous journey of discovery, and this blog reflects that.
Who is This Blog For?
This site is for anyone who’s curious—whether you’re a science geek, a casual learner, or even someone with no formal background in science but a desire to learn more. I hope to make this sometimes confusing world a little more approachable, whether you’re looking to dive deep into scientific concepts or just get a clearer picture of how science impacts our lives.
Conclusion
I’ll conclude this introduction with a quote from one of my favorites—J.R.R. Tolkien:
“The road must be trod, but it will be very hard. And neither strength nor wisdom will carry us far upon it. This quest may be attempted by the weak with as much hope as the strong. Yet such is oft the course of deeds that move the wheels of the world: small hands do them because they must, while the eyes of the great are elsewhere.” — Elrond, The Fellowship of the Ring.
Science, much like the journey Elrond describes, can be difficult and full of challenges. However, it is often the small, persistent efforts that drive the biggest changes, whether in research or in understanding the world around us. This blog is my small contribution to the larger scientific journey, and I hope that through exploring these topics together, we can all gain a bit more insight, knowledge, and maybe even inspire each other along the way.
